Guildford Election Special

Here in the Learning Resource Centre at Guildford we currently have a rolling display of information on the impending General Election.

If you are 18 or over you are entitled to vote on Thursday 8 June.

If you have not voted before you need to register to vote. There is an easy online form to fill in – but there is a deadline! You need to have registered by 23:59 on 22 May 2017.

If you are not on the electoral roll by the 22 of May you will not be allowed to vote in the election and have no say in the way we will be governed over the next five years.
No vote - no voice
Are you going to be on holiday or otherwise away from home on Election Day – 8 June? If you are you can apply for a postal vote.
Come up to the LRC to see who your current MP is and what constituency you live in. Some of the MPs in the surrounding area are well known names and faces in the current government and you may well be surprised at who your MP is.
Once the list of candidates is announced, they will be on display here so you can see who you can opt to vote for on the 8 June.

World Book Day 2017 - "Other Worlds"

World Book Day – celebrated all week!

This year we chose for our theme “Other Worlds” and promoted science fiction, fantasy, utopian and dystopian fiction. We all displayed maps of places found in fiction, from Narnia to the Oxford of the Northern Lights trilogy .  At Farnham College we also ran a Pictogram Quiz – quick and easy to do when time was tight.  20 students had a go at a quiz. Here is the geography class tackling the map quiz:
Congratulations to the winner of the Map Quiz: Saffron Torrance-Roset, pictured below receiving her prize from Glynnis Davis and to Elisha Fall who won the Pictogram Quiz.

Keen Merrist Wood students produced 33 entries.

The £10 print voucher went to Charlie Bentley (14011353) BTEC L3 Animal Management

The £5 print voucher went to Leo Anthony (14025389)BTEC L3 Sport (Chelsea FC Boys)

The students who did the quiz at Guildford College
were enthusiastic: one said she really enjoyed
the quiz and wanted more.

What happens to MW LRCs old books?

At MW LRC we are currently clearing out lots of old books that haven't been used in over 5 years or more, and some not since 1994.

As you know our shelves are very crowded so we are clearing space to allow room for new books and for students to be able to find resources more easily.

But what happens to the books we get rid of?

Well ever since 2009 we have been sending them to a company called Better World Books.

Better World Books are partnered with 5 literacy charities and they sell our old books for us. Part of the money comes back to College and the other part goes to the National Literacy Trust our chosen charity.

So here are some stats:

  • Since 2009 we have sent them 114 cartons or 1600 books
  • 51% of the books we have sent have been accepted for sale
  • Of the 831 books accepted 584 have been sold
  • The books have sold for an average of £11 each

All of the non accepted books are Recycled into animal bedding for horses.
